What's stewardship, especially Christian stewardship? As used in the Old Testament (Septuagint ), the related Greek words are:

  • oikos [pronounced EE-kos] - house or household
  • oikonomos - steward
  • oikonomia - stewardship

"Oikonomia" means management, oversight, or administration.  It is often used in relation to management of someone else's property.  We are the managers of God's property -- the earth, for example.  We are also stewards of spreading God's Word.  Our Lord expects us to be good stewards of our relationships with other people.  The responsibilities for us "managers" for God blankets our lives.

Clarence Stoughton said,
"Stewardship is everything you do after you say yes to Jesus Christ."

The question is whether we are we being good managers of the Lord's property when we allow such things as pollution of God's air, water, and land? Are we being good administrators of God's people when we allow social and economic injustice?

"Think of us in this way, as servants of Christ and stewards of God's mysteries.
Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy."
— 1 Corinthians 4:1-2, NRSV

The bigger question is, of course, whether could you look Christ in the eye when He returns and be proud of the earth we turn over to Him.  No?  Then what are you gong to do about it?  When? There is no "Plan B" -- Christ is counting on us. How well are we overseeing the spreading of God's Word?  Do our relationships with others make God smile or frown? Do we take care of our God-given bodies in a way that says "I praise you, Lord"?

We do not know the day or hour of Christ's return. The time for action is now.
